At a glance

A flat roof drain assessment considers visible condition, the connection to the membrane and the route water takes into the outlet. A roofing defect and an obstruction inside the pipe can require different work and different specialists.

Start with useful observations

Note whether water collects around one drain, whether the problem returns after leaves fall and whether an interior leak occurs. Photographs available without climbing onto the roof can help. However, water near an outlet does not establish whether the problem comes from the membrane or piping. Timing and repeated observations provide a more useful starting point than a single image.

Treat the connection as part of the system

The drain’s connection to the membrane must match the selected components and assembly. During reroofing, the drain’s condition and position relative to the proposed layers deserve review. The proposal should explain whether work includes adjusting a connection, replacing a component or repairing only the neighbouring membrane. These are different scopes with different implications for the project.

Coordinate responsibilities

If drainage appears obstructed inside the building, a plumbing assessment may be needed. Work on interior piping should be distinguished from roofing work. Coordination helps prepare access and review the operation of the affected system. Keep observations, completed work and follow-up recommendations with the roof records so future discussions start with a clear history.

Prepare for our conversation

  • Known drain locations and ponding areas
  • Blockage or overflow history
  • Recent roofing or piping repairs
  • Access to the roof and affected interior areas

Your questions, answered.

Can a photograph confirm that a drain is blocked?

A photograph can guide the questions but cannot show the condition of the entire pipe. A site assessment and, depending on the problem, a plumbing investigation may be needed.

Does roof replacement include every drain?

That should not be assumed. The quotation must identify affected drains and components, including connections to remain or be replaced. The scope of interior piping work should also be clear.

Can I remove a blockage myself?

Roof access must be safe first. Avoid dismantling a drain or pushing objects into it without understanding the assembly. A qualified person should identify the cause and suitable intervention.
